Temporary Research Data Specialist 08219
Job Description
Description
Work to document and archive an important,
long-term ecological data collection. The Cornell
Biological Field Station (CBFS), located on the
south shore of Oneida Lake, NY (12 miles
northeast of Syracuse), is recognized nationally
and internationally for its research
accomplishments in basic and applied ecology. In
partnership with the NYS Department of
Environmental Conservation, CBFS launched studies
in 1957 of fish populations that have resulted in
a unique and valuable long-term collection of
data. Cornell's Albert R. Mann Library, with
funding from the National Science Foundation, is
providing the staff and skills to curate these data.
Work with library and field station staff to
create high quality metadata (documentation) for
research data sets. Provide occasional assistance
with field work to gain an understanding of the
data collection process. Edit and reformat data
sets to facilitate reuse and long term digital
preservation. Collect and record information from
field station staff on sampling methods used in
data collection. Georeference sampling locations
using GIS software and/or GPS. Use online tools
to create and edit metadata, and edit web portal
to provide project information. In addition to
helping curate an important long-term data
collection, opportunities exist to learn about
semantic web application development, novel
techniques for managing metadata, as well as
aquatic ecology in general (CBFS hosts a dynamic
Research Experience for Undergraduates program in
the summer). Position is based at CBFS and
housing is provided. Occasional travel from CBFS
to Ithaca required (reimbursed or using state fleet car).
