Good morning; I'm in the unpleasant position of having discovered the first
official specimen of the rusty crayfish in my local Black River here in
Vermont.  I'm looking not only for resources on implementing a monitoring and
capture program for these critters, but also for educational outreach.  I'm
familiar already with programs in Arizona and Wisconsin and am in touch with my
state's officials at the Agency of Natural Resources.

One aspect of the rusty ecology that interests me is the fact that it seems to
have been brought into the area not from a distant or exotic location, but from
the Ohio River Valley (Kentucky and Tennessee), by anglers releasing their
leftover bait.  I am learning how the rusty out-competes the natives and
impacts both flora and fauna in a stream...but how do they keep from being
'invasive' in their home range?  What keeps them 'in check' in the Ohio River
Valley?  Certain fish species that aren't present up north?  Rusties prefer
warmer water, so the far northern cold mountain streams are thus far uninvaded,
so to speak; but why don't they out-compete everything in streams and lakes of
Tennessee and Kentucky?

I'm just starting to look at the work of David Lodge, in hopes that he and his
students have touched on this, but am having a hard time locating specific
information.  My next step is to contact Dr. Lodge personally.  Any help you
folks can offer would be most appreciated!

Cheers,
Kelly Stettner

We are looking for a postdoctoral associate to join a joint project between
the University of Georgia and the New York Department of Health and Mental
Hygiene on the population dynamics of West Nile Virus in New York City.
Goals of this project are to understand the environmental drivers of
transmission in heterogeneous structured environments, to develop a
statistical understanding aimed at developing early warning systems for
vector-borne outbreaks, and to identify strategies for containment and
control. The successful applicant should have a background in population
biology of infectious diseases, epidemiology, or medical entomology.
Experience with the R programming language for either geostatistics or time
series analysis is required. Experience in one or more of the following
areas is desirable: spatial point processes, spatial generalized linear
models, generalized additive models (GAMs), estimation with Markov Chain
Monte Carlo, statistical or machine learning, semiparametric modeling, or
mapping and data management with geographic information systems (GIS).

The position is initially for one year with a starting salary of $41,715.
Start date is negotiable. For more information about the Drake Lab, please

Position description - KBS Animal Science Faculty

Title of Position: Grazing Ecologist for Dairy Systems
Level: Assistant or Associate Professor
Responsibilities: 60% research, 20% teaching 20% extension/outreach
Appointment: AN (annual year); 75% KBS, 25 % ANS

Michigan State University's Kellogg Biological Station (KBS) and Department

of Animal Science (ANS) are seeking a jointly appointed, assistant or
associate professor in the area of pasture-based dairy production systems
and the interactions with ecosystem and landscape processes. The position
is based at KBS with tenure in the Department of Animal Science. KBS is
establishing a new pasture-based dairy system
(<http://www.kbs.msu.edu/farm/dairy/pastureresearch.php>http://www.kbs.msu.edu/farm/dairy/pastureresearch.php)

with support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and this position is
affiliated with this system. The strengths of KBS and ANS in ecology;
sustainable agriculture; dairy nutrition and management; and animal health,
reproduction, and welfare, present an outstanding opportunity to lead the
development of interdisciplinary research and educational programs on
pasture-based dairy systems. KBS also hosts an NSF-LTER project on the
ecology of row-cropping systems and the DOE funded Great Lakes BioEnergy
Research Center, which provide additional possibilities for research
collaborations.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. and a demonstrated record of excellence in
research in one or more of the following areas: dairy science, animal
health and welfare, nutrient and water management, forage utilization,
behavioral ecology, biological diversity and ecosystem services from
pasture production systems. A systems approach is desirable. Postdoctoral
experience is preferred. The successful candidate is expected to establish
a strong, extramurally funded research program with support for graduate
students, to facilitate collaborative research at the new dairy facility on
issues relating to the ecology of pasture-based dairy systems, to co-teach
a course in their area of interest on the main campus, to contribute to
educational and outreach programs at KBS and with the MSU Dairy Area of
Expertise team, and to participate in graduate and undergraduate
specializations in sustainable agriculture and food systems at MSU.
Additional opportunities include overseeing a small grants research program
for work at the KBS dairy facility.

Questions and applications should be sent to
<mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>[EMAIL PROTECTED] and addressed to the
Chair,
Grazing Ecologist Search Committee, W.K. Kellogg Biological Station,
Michigan State University. Applications should include a curriculum vita,
statements of research and teaching interests (including current and
long-term goals), and names and contact information for three references,
sent electronically as a single pdf. Signed letters of reference will be
solicited from finalists. Review of applications will begin on 2 September
2008 and will continue until an appropriate candidate is found.

Further information about KBS and ANS can be found at
<http://kbs.msu.edu/>http://kbs.msu.edu and

Action/Equal Opportunity Institution; women and minorities are particularly
welcome to apply.

Subject: NOAA/Coral Reef Ecosystem Studies Program FY2009 Federal Funding
Opportunity Announcement

The NOAA/NOS/NCCOS/Center for Sponsored Coastal Ocean Research has
issued a Federal Funding Opportunity (FFO) announcement under its Coral
Reef Ecosystem Studies (CRES) Program entitled /From Science to
Conservation: Linking Coral Reefs, Coastal Watersheds and their Human
Communities in the Pacific Islands/ to support the transition of
research to operations in the Micronesian Islands. The main goal of
this new CRES funding opportunity is to utilize existing scientific
tools and approaches (e.g., biophysical models; coupled watershed and
hydrodynamic models, etc.) within a social, cultural, and economic
framework to develop and implement effective coastal ecosystem
management practices.

In order for ecosystem management strategies aimed at restoring degraded
reefs, protecting healthy reefs, and ultimately maintaining the valuable
ecosystem resources and services that reefs provide to society to be
effective, they need to be designed and implemented by incorporating key
stakeholders from the local communities during both the development and
implementation process. Preference will be given to those proposals
that include applicant teams comprised of scientists, resource managers,
and a variety of community representatives of the appropriate local
community governmental and non-governmental organizations.

Potential applicants are encouraged to carefully read the FFO to fully
familiarize themselves with the announcement. Particular attention must
be given to the programmatic requirements to make sure that proposed
projects will satisfy the announcement's goals and objectives. Please
note that the announcement is targeted to proposals that include at
least two of the Micronesian Island Groups (i.e., Guam, American Samoa,
Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Marshall Islands,
Federated States of Micronesia, and Republic of Palau).
