POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Director of the Wallowa Mountain Institute of Wallowa Resources, Enterprise, Oregon Position Overview: Wallowa Resources (WR), located in Enterprise, Oregon, invites applications for the position of Director of its education and research unit, the Wallowa Mountain Institute (WMI). Our mission is to promote and support healthy lands and communities through knowledge, research and outreach. Education, training, development and the application of knowledge are central to the programs. As Director of WMI, the successful applicant will report to the Executive Director of WR. He/she will be responsible for the leadership, planning, administration and management of education, research and outreach programs and activities by WMI and for partnerships with local schools and colleges and universities. He/she will work with and oversee the programs of the WMI professional staff. The current programs of work build upon a series of successful education, research and outreach programs and educational partnerships. The Setting: Located in the northeast corner of Oregon at the base of the Wallowa Mountains, Wallowa County is a beautiful setting with diverse ecology. The County’s lands include a mixture of both private and public lands. Private lands include farm, ranch, forestland, and the Nature Conservancy’s Zumwalt Prairie. Public lands include the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area, the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, and Wallowa Lake State Park. Major rivers include the Snake, Wallowa, Imnaha and Grande Ronde Rivers. The County is well known for the arts, as well as a recreational and retirement destination. The community offers high quality primary and secondary schools, a desirable quality of life and a good place to raise children. Primary Selection Criteria: 1. Minimum of a Master’s degree in a natural resource discipline or social science related to natural resources. 2. Experience in the planning and implementation of education, research and outreach programs emphasizing the natural environment, community development and/or related fields. 3. At least 5 years experience and management responsibilities for personnel, strategic planning, budgets, grant writing, fund raising and program delivery. 4. Working knowledge of rural communities, and management strategies as they relate to working landscapes. 5. Excellent written and oral communications skills, including ease in communicating complex concepts in a clear effective fashion for a general audience. Sensitivity to cultural differences. 6. Ability to meet deadlines. 7. Demonstrated strong analytical skills, including an ability to synthesize large amounts of information and to focus quickly on the essence of an issue. A strong commitment to producing measurable results. 8. Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop and manage productive relationships with staff within WR and WMI, as well as with landowners and managers, scientists, state and federal agencies, university faculty, and other stakeholders. 9. Good computer skills. Salary and Funding: Initial funding is provided by a grant from the Murdock Trust. This grant provides full funding for the first year of this position and partial funding for years two and three. The WMI Director, working with Wallowa Resources’ Executive Director, will secure additional grants and other funding necessary to support this position and the programs of WMI. The salary is based upon the training and experiences of the applicant and will be a minimum of $45,000 per year plus benefits. The benefits package includes medical, dental, paid vacation and holidays and a 403B retirement plan. Travel It is anticipated that the individual in this position will travel locally and occasionally within Oregon and nationally.
