Restoration and Land Management Specialist

Description:
The Great Basin Institute is hiring two AmeriCorps interns to assist in
watershed restoration and recreation efforts in conjunction with the
Conservancy. Interns will work under the general supervision of Conservancy
staff to implement a variety of watershed monitoring tasks and conduct
public outreach in support of recreation initiatives. The positions will
provide the successful candidates with experience in a variety of
disciplines. It is anticipated that the two interns will work as a team
focusing approximately 75% of their efforts on watershed restoration
activities and 25% on recreation and outreach activities. There may be
flexibility to divide the duties to best fit each intern’s skills and interests.

Specific watershed tasks will include performing baseline groundwater,
vegetation, wildlife habitat, geomorphic, and water quality monitoring for
large scale river restoration projects in the Tahoe Basin. Other activities
may include invasive weed control, vegetation propagation, and implementing
adaptive management strategies. Interns may also collect GPS data and assist
with data management & analysis, and map creation. 

To support the recreation program, interns will provide outreach, related to
non-motorized recreation, to community groups and the general public.
Outreach activities will include, but are not limited to, providing public
informational talks, organizing community events, developing brochures or
other graphic materials, coordinating efforts of the Lake Tahoe Water Trail
Committee, and/or leading outreach efforts for the new Van Sickle Bi-State Park.

Location:
The position will be based out of the California Tahoe Conservancy
(Conservancy) office in South Lake Tahoe, CA. Field work will be throughout
the California side of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Compensation:  
o       Living Stipend: $16,350
o       Education Award: $5,350

Timeline:  
Start Date: February 14, 2011; Approximately 1 Year Contract 

Required Qualifications:
o       Bachelors Degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Hydrology, 
Recreation,
Landscape Architecture, or a related field; or equivalent experience;
o       Strong professional interest in watershed restoration and/or recreation
o       Strong communication skills (both verbal and written);
o       Strong interpersonal skills;
o       Ability to work independently and in a team environment;
o       Motivated, self-starter who is able to work with limited direct 
supervision;
o       Detail oriented, and possess good organizational skills;
o       Ability to make graphics and public presentations
o       Ability to think ahead and plan for a diverse workload

Desired Qualifications:
o       Experience or knowledge of ArcGIS and Trimble GPS units;
o       Experience conducting wildlife or vegetation surveys;
o       Experience in benthic macroinvertebrate monitoring;
o       Experience performing river cross sections or using survey equipment;
o       Experience with restoration project development;
o       Familiarity with Microsoft Office software;
o       Confident public speaker;
o       Ability to work with diverse people to organize events or volunteer 
activities
