Assistant Professor in Conservation Biology

The George Mason University, Office of the Provost, Smithsonian-Mason Global Conservation Studies Program (<http://mccs.gmu.edu>http://mccs.gmu.edu) invites applications for an Assistant Professor in conservation biology for a full-time, term instructional position for 2012. The Smithsonian-Mason Global Conservation Studies Program offers undergraduate and graduate students and professionals the unprecedented opportunity to interact, learn from, and network with world-leading conservation biologists, scientists, development organizations, policymakers, educators and conservation practitioners. The program currently offers courses in conservation theory, field methods and practice, and human dimensions of conservation. Instructors include Mason faculty, Smithsonian professionals, and colleagues from other national and international organizations and governments. The U.S.-based programs take place at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI). SCBI is a historic and beautiful 3,200-acre facility in Front Royal, Va., and is a research base for scientists working at the cutting-edge of wildlife ecology, conservation biology, veterinary medicine, sustainable development, genetics, reproductive science and ecological monitoring. This position is a full-time, 12-month, renewable instructional appointment with significant student contact based at SCBI in Front Royal, Va. We are seeking individuals committed to excellence in teaching and experience in curricular development with a strong interest in working with students. Specific responsibilities will include teaching, advising of students, coordination of tutoring and recitations, supervising internships, and curricular development activities. In spring 2012, duties will include continued planning for the undergraduate program as well as planning and instructional activities in the developing graduate/professional program. In fall 2012, major duties will include serving as resident faculty fellow for the Smithsonian Mason Undergraduate Semester Program. A Ph.D. in conservation biology, ecology, zoology, wildlife management, human dimensions of conservation, or related disciplines is required.
