*Threat Catalog for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species*
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is undertaking a project 'Threat Catalog for the IUCN Red List of Threatened species’. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species is widely recognized as the most comprehensive, objective global approach for evaluating the conservation status of plant and animal species. The goal of the IUCN Red List is To provide information and analyses on the status, trends and threats to species in order to inform and catalyse action for biodiversity conservation. Capturing information on the threats to a species is an integral component of the Red List assessment process. The Red List includes a threat classification schema specifically designed for this purpose (found here: http://www.iucnredlist.org/technical-documents/classification-schemes/threats-classification-scheme-ver3 ). The Schema is exhaustive and includes threats ranging from invasive species to urban development to habitat loss. This project aims to catalog existing spatially explicit layers relevant to threats to biodiversity. We have undertaken an initial review of what spatial layers exist, and after searching for global and regional data relevant to the Threat Classification Schema of IUCN, we have managed to come up with an extensive list of links to various types of threat data. While this this list still needs to be expanded to fill in the data gaps, the result has the potential to be hugely valuable to the global conservation community.. Thus, we seek suggestions regarding any relevant data sources omitted from the current catalog. To help, please visit this link to view the datasets that we have preliminarily identified, and to add any suggestions of your own. https://skydrive.live.com/redir.aspx?cid=9da2a689acdeb19a&resid=9DA2A689ACDEB19A!107&parid=9DA2A689ACDEB19A!103&authkey=!AORUx4QUabfj_NU The link above connects to the Excel sheet that has been prepared and shared online. The contents are as follows- Sheet 1: Global and Regional Threats data links (view only) Sheet 2: Global Threats data links only (view only) Sheet 3: Extensive IUCN Threats Classification (view only) Sheet 4: Place to add your entries for any data links available (view and edit) Sheet 4 has been created for you to add any relevant entries to data links that are available. The format is as follows- Threat Sub Class Number : Please refer to sheet 3 for the exact threat class or subclass number Data Link : http://xxxxxxxxxxx Brief data Description : xxxxxxxxxxx If you have difficulty adding data to the excel sheet, but would still like to contribute, please send an email with details of the datasets to Amruta Awachat ([email protected]) with the subject line "IUCN Threat Catalog". Thank you for helping. Regards, Amruta Awachat Biodiversity Conservation Intern - International Union for Conservation of Nature
