The Holden Arboretum invites applications for a full time Scientist to conduct basic and applied research in plant biology focusing on some aspect of woody plants and their environments. Particular areas of specialization can include but are not limited to ecological restoration, environmental horticulture, plant ecology, plant ecophysiology, plant pathology, and urban forestry. The scientist will establish an internationally recognized research program in plant biology and must demonstrate the ability to lead a strong, independent, extramurally funded research program, and to be a spokesperson to diverse public and professional audiences regarding research activities. Staff Scientists currently conduct research in three broad areas: how plants and soil respond to stress, mechanisms by which organisms tolerate environmental change, and the importance of biological diversity in forest ecosystems. We are especially interested in individuals who may be able to incorporate Holdens extensive natural areas and collection of woody plant species in their research program.
The Holden Arboretum (www.holdenarb.org) is an outdoor living museum that promotes the beauty and importance of trees and other woody plants to create sustainable and healthy communities in the Great Lakes region and beyond. Holden is one of the largest, non-profit public gardens in the USA, with over 3500 contiguous acres of gardens, documented plant collections, and natural areas that include areas of mature forest. The research program is housed in a modern science center that contains 15,000 square feet of greenhouse and research facilities. Holden scientists have the opportunity for academic appointments and interdisciplinary interactions with students and faculty from neighboring universities including Kent State University (www.kent.edu), Case Western Reserve University (www.cwru.edu), and The Ohio State University (www.osu.edu). Interested applicants should have a Ph.D. in biology, ecology, horticulture or related discipline and postdoctoral experience is preferred.
