Unity College seeks to hire an Assistant/Associate Professor in Sustainable 
Forest Management to join our faculty beginning in the fall of 2013. Faculty in 
this position will address the management of forest resources from 
silvicultural, ecological, and political perspectives to develop a 
transdisciplinary understanding of sustainable forest practices.  Candidates 
are expected to advance the college’s newly adopted framework of Sustainability 
Science throughout the forestry related curriculum.



The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in forest resource 
use, mensuration, and policy.  Preference will be given to candidates who use a 
transdisciplinary approach to forest management that considers topics such as 
sustainable forest management, forest policy, human dimensions of forest 
resources, wildlife habitats, wildland fire science, and biodiversity.  The 
candidate is expected to teach in and provide leadership and disciplinary 
support for the college’s natural resource management and protection programs. 
This academic year (9 month) appointment includes teaching existing courses and 
developing curricula for new courses, coordinating with faculty in related 
programs, contributing to general education and/or capstone courses, supporting 
undergraduate research, leading students in educational and co-curricular 
activities, advising students, and participating in campus committees and other 
traditional academic functions.



Ideal candidates will demonstrate competencies in the following areas: 1) 
understanding of the intersection of natural resource policy and sustainable 
forestry practice, 2) field techniques in forest mensuration and management, 3) 
application of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and/or remote sensing to 
forest management issues, 4) proven excellence in undergraduate teaching, 5) 
demonstrated potential for engaging undergraduates in research and securing 
external funding for research, and 6) ability to engage community partners 
through experiential pedagogies such as community based learning.  Experience 
working with federal and state forest and wildlife agencies as well as 
nonprofit land conservation organizations is an advantage.



Qualifications: Ph.D. degree in forest resource management or closely related 
field (ex. forestry, forest economics, silviculture, or timber management) at 
time of employment is required.
