Description 
****PLEASE NOTE: This position is exempt from the tobacco free hiring 
policy because the expected length of assignment is under 12 weeks. 
 
Intern (Paid) Forestry Outreach:  Summer 2013 Internship to assist with 
the protection and preservation of Sarasota County's natural resources; 
specifically to conduct research relating to canopy coverage and tree 
resources, providing information about trees and forested habitats to the 
public, and assist with public outreach initiatives in support of 
conservation and environmental stewardship.

****Internship is an (8 weeks assignment)**** 

Duties:

Conduct a tree canopy coverage analysis for Sarasota County using web-
based GIS software.  
Conduct field inspections associated with canopy analysis. 
Inspect county preserves and video/photograph facilities and amenities for 
use in outreach materials. 
Participate in public outreach events pertaining to natural resources.  
Assist with data entry related to tree resources using ArcMap 
Other duties as assigned by supervisor. 
 
Minimum Qualifications:  Must be enrolled and in an accredited college or 
university studying forestry, natural resource management, environmental 
science, environmental policy, or equivalent.  **A valid Driver's License 
is required.  

Preferred Qualifications:  Training or certification in GIS, Skill in 
using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access databases,  and ArcMap, and 
conducting web research 
Proficient with digital photography 
Public speaking abilities 

Job Competencies: Knowledge of terrestrial ecosystems, forestry 
principles, GIS software and tools, and aerial interpretation

Work Work Hours:  20 hours per week, Monday – Friday with flexibility 
available and occasional weekend hours may be required.   
 
SPECIAL NOTE:  Proof of enrollment at your present university or college 
will be required.  You MUST be currently enrolled at your university or 
college during this internship assignment OR returning to your university 
or college in the Fall, 2013 in order to be eligible.
