Location: University of Maine in Orono, Maine
Position Title: Lecturer in Biology Education
Department: School of Biology & Ecology
Purpose:  The School of Biology and Ecology seeks applicants for a two year 
fixed-length, fiscal year 
Lecturer position with an August start date. This position will have 
responsibilities for 50% biological 
education research and 50% teaching.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
One of the primary research responsibilities of this position is to contribute 
to research on faculty 
professional development.  The research will specifically focus on how faculty 
at several institutions 
incorporate short answer questions into their large-lecture biology courses and 
use the information 
to guide instruction. This work will be conducted as part of a 
multi-institution, interdisciplinary effort 
to explore faculty adoption and use of assessments developed for the Automated 
Analysis of 
Constructed Response (AACR) project (www.msu.edu/~aacr), which is supported by 
the National 
Science Foundation’s Transforming Undergraduate Education in Science, 
Technology, Engineering and 
Mathematics (TUES) and Widening Implementation and Demonstration of 
Evidence-Based Reforms 
(WIDER) programs. The employee is expected to carry out all aspects of the 
research in collaboration 
with the supervisor and technical staff working on this project, including 
designing experiments and 
performing data analysis. In addition, the individual is expected to contribute 
to the writing of 
scientific reports and lay articles. Specific projects and responsibilities may 
change with subsequent 
funding opportunities.

The teaching component of this position includes leading inquiry-based 
laboratory experiences for 
first-year undergraduate students, developing and delivering recitation 
activities for physiology 
courses, and teaching portions of the majors and non-majors introductory 
biology courses. 

Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in biology, molecular biology, physiology, biology education, or a 
closely related field is 
required by date of hire. The applicant must have a demonstrated interest in 
discipline-based 
education research. Preference will be given to applicants who have a record of 
successful work in 
their biology field; skills in analyzing the effectiveness of classroom 
activities; demonstrated 
excellence in teaching; and have evidence of collaborating well as part of a 
team.

Appropriate background checks are required.
