A Research Associate position is available in the *Department of Renewable Resources, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada *
*Position Description:* Research Associate (PhD) in ecosystem assembly and succession in reclaimed western boreal ecosystems. We are seeking a research associate to take a lead role in assembling information to better inform reclamation of upland oilsands sites to sustainable forest communities through literature reviews, workshops, analysis of existing data, and supplemental field data collection. Major deliverables from the project will include: 1) A review of information and a synthesis of available data on plant community succession as it relates to reclamation of uplands sites in the mineable oilsands of Alberta; 2) A strategy and framework to guide future plant establishment, research and monitoring projects, towards a better understanding of vegetation prescriptions; 3) One or more papers submitted for publication in peer-reviewed journals; and, 4) Workshops for exchange of information relating to plant community succession on reclaimed upland oilsands sites. *Employment Period*: January 2, 2015 to December 31, 2016 (24 months). *Major Qualifications*: PhD in plant community ecology or related field. (Candidates with an MSc plus substantial relevant experience will be considered). Knowledge of reclamation practices and procedures relevant to the mineable oilsands region of Alberta together with general knowledge of ecosystem reclamation and restoration practices. Solid knowledge of ecological succession and plant community assembly including an understanding of how plant traits, interspecific and intraspecific interactions, and environmental factors influence community composition and succession. Proficiency and experience with statistical analysis of plant community and ecological data. Basic knowledge of relevant soil properties (physical and chemical) and pedogenic processes, for both natural and reclaimed ecosystems is also desired. Demonstrated written and oral communication skills in English. Demonstrated ability to synthesize and summarize complex data and information.
