Position Title: Acoustical Research Coordinator (Colorado State 
University – Research Associate I or II dependent upon qualifications)

Location:       Fort Collins, Colorado

Salary: $35,000 – $45,000 (dependent on experience) plus benefits

Full Consideration Date: October 31, 2014

Start date: January 2015

Tour of Duty: Full-time (includes benefits) One year initial term with 
possible extension depending on performance and project funding. The 
position is funded entirely from federal sources under an NPS 
Cooperative Agreement.

Duties: 
The National Park Service (NPS), Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division 
(NSNSD) is part of the Natural Resource Stewardship and Science 
Directorate (NRSS), a national office, located in Fort Collins, 
Colorado. The NSNSD assists park units in monitoring and managing 
acoustical environments. This position will manage the analysis of the 
acoustical data needed to support park management, and will be 
supervised through the department of Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation 
Biology at Colorado State University (CSU). The position may also assist 
NSNSD staff and CSU students and staff in collecting and analyzing 
acoustical data. Applicants must be adaptable, available for short term 
travel, capable of working in wilderness, and possess a keen interest 
scientific analysis and science education.

The incumbent’s primary duties include:

Data Processing and reporting:
1.      Manage daily operations (including scheduling, dataset 
preparation, recruiting, and training) at an “undergraduate listening 
lab,” based at Colorado State University
2.      Process acoustical data to identify sound sources and extract 
quantitative measures relevant to park unit management issues
3.      Securely archive data analysis results
4.      Prepare data summaries and technical reports for publication
5.      Coordinate with NPS scientists

Outreach and Education
1.      Mentor undergraduate students who are pursuing acoustical 
research
2.      Collaborate with CSU faculty, staff, and students to develop 
bioacoustical research projects and complete data analysis
3.      Develop and conduct presentations and material to educate 
various audiences on bioacoustics, including undergraduate course 
lectures 
4.      Participate in informal science education with diverse groups to 
further the mission of the NSNSD and to advance the science of 
bioacoustics

The incumbent’s additional responsibilities may include:
1.      Perform data entry and other data formatting as needed to 
populate acoustics databases
2.      Provide technical assistance to park staff and other personnel 
associated with the Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division
3.      Prepare graphical displays of data and results for technical and 
lay audiences
4.      Other duties as assigned by project managers

Supervisory Controls:
The position reports to the CSU Principal Investigator in the Department 
of Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Biology, working closely with the NPS 
Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division manager and staff.

Required Job Qualifications     
1.      Master’s degree or 5 years relevant experience (preferably in 
natural/physical science, engineering, or natural resources)
2.      Experience collaborating with diverse groups including academic 
faculty, staff, and graduate/undergraduate students on data analysis and 
research
3.      Demonstrated experience teaching or mentoring others in a 
scientific context
4.      Experience with database and statistical software
5.      Available for short term travel (up to three week at a time)
6.      Field experience in physical or biological sciences

Preferred Job Qualifications    
1.      PhD in natural/physical science, engineering or natural 
resources
2.      Experience or education in acoustics; ability to detect and 
identify sound sources in quiet natural areas
3.      Experience with specialized acoustic software (Raven, SongScope, 
Ishmael, MATLAB, SonoBat, etc.)
4.      Experience with GIS, computer programming, and/or modeling
5.      Experience using and maintaining scientific instruments or 
electronics
6.      Experience practicing and/or promoting safety in the workplace
7.      Personal and professional commitment to diversity as 
demonstrated by involvement in teaching, research, creative activity, 
service to the profession and/or diversity/inclusion activities.
