Purpose of the Position
This is a general announcement to create an
applicant pool to fill several Technician II
positions with the Native Village of Eyaks (NVE)
Department of the Environment and Natural
Resources (DENR) based in Cordova, Alaska. The
term of the positions will be a minimum of 3
months with the possibility of extension up to 6
months, depending on availability, need, and
funding. This position supports project managers
in successfully conducting research in fisheries,
wildlife, and may also be utilized in
environmental programs. The position will
require travel and fieldwork in remote areas.
Applicants should expect to spend the entire
season in the field, at the discretion of Project
Managers. Successfully concluding the season may
result in promotion to Technician III. The
majority of the available field work is to
provide a Chinook salmon escapement estimate on
the Copper River, through a mark re-capture and
radio tagging program, an important and
longstanding project that is well known and fully funded through 2017.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Work safely and effectively in a group, and independently.
· Collect reliable and accurate data.
· Assist with data Quality Assurance/Quality Control.
· Assist with the coordination of Tribal education opportunities.
· Logistical support including, but not
limited to, helicopter sling loading,
ordering/purchasing gear and supplies, delivering
supplies to remote sites, assessing and reporting
on field conditions, determining points of
access/egress to remote sites, conducting safety
briefings, camp mobilization/demobilization, camp operation and maintenance.
· Other duties as developed and assigned.
Conditions of Work
Majority of work will be completed out of doors
with varying levels of office/computer work. The
position may require a considerable amount of
physical activity while conducting fieldwork,
including hiking and climbing over difficult
terrain. Work may include exposure to severe
weather (heat, cold and wet); hazards associated
with operating traps to collect fish, power
tools, boating in inclement weather, and working
in areas containing large predators (including,
but not limited to, bears and wolves). Work will
be conducted in remote wilderness settings, often
on challenging rivers, coastal and marine
habitats, rainforests, snowpack, frozen rivers
and lakes, wetlands, and in office settings.
Applicants should be able to work in close
quarters with a small research field crew for 3-6
months in a remote wilderness setting. The work
requires the ability to operate small boats in
swift and/or open water and carry firearms for
protection from predators. Operation of a 4wd vehicle off-road may be required.
Qualifications
Required
· BS or BA in fisheries or wildlife
biology, or a related field OR College student
with a declared major in science related field
and minimum 2 year completed coursework and one
seasons field experience, OR 3+ years work
experience in fisheries/wildlife or similar field (technicians).
· Experience using The Scientific Method,
remote field research, sampling and data
collection, and public awareness education.
· Ability to live and work safely and
effectively in small, isolated groups in a remote
wilderness setting throughout employment term.
· Physical ability to work long hours
outdoors, with strength and endurance to
continually lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs,
and briefly lift and carry objects up to 100 lbs.
· Strong team member skills and ability to
contribute positively to maintaining team morale,
maintain a calm personal demeanor.
· Ability to use critical problem solving
skills under difficult circumstances.
· Ability to safely operate a variety of
boat types, in both river and ocean environments
with a high level of competence. Ability to
trailer, launch and recover boats from 14-30
solo. Ability to operate boats single-handed,
and fully laden with personnel, gear, and/or equipment.
· Valid Drivers License, or ability to attain one prior to employment.
Preferred
· Experience building, maintaining and
operating fishwheels, safely capturing and
handling large adult fish, PIT tagging,
collecting biometric data and collecting
specimens from live subjects without harm.
· Experience with fisheries/wildlife
research, including trapping and handling of
large fish, mammals and birds, collecting
specimens, telemetry, and identifying Alaskan fish, mammals and birds .
· Post-graduate degree or certification-
may include a Masters or PhD degree, teaching
certificate, trade certificate or similar in any related field.
· Ability to troubleshoot and repair
mechanical and electrical equipment including
outboard motors (2-stroke and 4-stroke), diesel
engines, generators, computers, remote energy
systems (wind, solar, propane, gas generator), appliances, etc.
· Advanced computer skills, including GIS and statistical analysis.
· Professional experience working in remote locations in Alaska.
· Experience working with Alaska Tribes,
and knowledge of subsistence resource issues.
· Expert level proficiency in carrying
large firearms as a bear deterrent.
Preference for qualified applicants will be given
to Alaska Native/American Indians.
