SAGEBRUSH FIELD TECHNICIAN NEEDED
Description:
Gain field experience in sampling vegetation, soils, and habitat
attributes in the beautiful sage-brush steppe of Northwestern
Colorado and Wyoming! We are seeking 1-2 field technicians to join
our interdisciplinary rangeland-wildlife habitat field research team
from early July through mid-August 2015. Fieldwork involves one 2-day
training session in late May/June and 3 or 4 extended 4 to 8-day
field data collection trips during July and August to locations in
Northwest Colorado (Moffat, Routt, Rio Blanco, Garfield Counties and
potentially some site in Wyoming). The primary duties of the
technician will be to collect and record vegetation and soils data
while working closely with Masters and PhD students, and project
staff. While prior experience with data collection is preferred,
training and mentorship will be provided for an enthusiastic
applicant with high attention to detail and willingness to learn.
Successful applicants must have previous experience camping in a
backcountry setting, as the field crew camps for 4-7 nights while in
the field. Applicants must demonstrate their ability to cope with
challenging conditions in the field, which may include wind, heat and
insects, and be able to hike over uneven terrain while carrying up to
30 pounds. Applicants with interest in soils, botany, range science
and/or wildlife habitat are preferred. This is an excellent
opportunity for anyone who loves to explore unique ecosystems and is
interested in a career in wildlife, range, or natural resource
management. By participating in our field crew, you will gain field
experience and participate in a collaborative effort to integrate
wildlife indicators into NRCS Ecological Site Descriptions for
adaptive management of sagebrush rangelands and wildlife populations.
