*Proposed Start Date:* 6/1/2015 *Estimated Duration of Appointment*: This is a temporary position not to exceed 24 months. *Posting Open Date:* 4/6/2015 *Posting Close Date:* 4/21/2015 *Description of Work:* We seek a research technician for an applied marine ecology and conservation study investigating the most widely recognized and pressing questions about artificial reef design and function. Artificial reefs in coastal ocean waters of North Carolina are prime recreational fishing and diving sites, as well as critical habitat for recreationally and commercially important fish species. This two-year study seeks to address knowledge gaps concerning the function of artificial reefs in order to improve their fish production. Specifically, we aim to understand the effect of artificial reef siting location and buffer zones relative to existing natural reefs. We will also evaluate the effectiveness of novel artificial reef structures and how artificial reefs influence soundscape ecology and flow regime. Project results will be used to guide management and conservation decisions in North Carolina. Primary technician duties include year-round SCUBA field surveys that will be conducted in North Carolina coastal ocean waters, as well as data management and analysis. The position will be based at the UNC-CH Institute of Marine Sciences, 3431 Arendell Street, Morehead City, NC 28557. *Education and Experience*: SCUBA experience with minimum of 75 logged dives and Rescue Diver certification *strongly* preferred. AAUS certification preferred. Bachelor’s degree in biology, marine science, ecology, or environmental science preferred. Preference will be given to recent graduates with long-term interest in obtaining experience that will prepare them for success in graduate school and in a marine conservation ecology career. Familiarity with statistical analysis using R and Matlab and experience with ArcGIS are a plus. *Special Physical and Mental Requirements: *This work will require the ability to lift at least 50 lbs., to work in cold/hot, wet conditions, as well as during some early-morning and late-night shifts.
