Michigan Tech Research Institute (MTRI) is a research center of Michigan Technological University. MTRI is a recognized leader in the research, development and practical application of sensor and information technology to solve critical problems in environmental processes. MTRI is seeking an experienced field technician for summer field work conducting wetland bird and frog/toad point counts in coastal wetlands along Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron. The successful applicant will be part of a field team sampling coastal wetlands across Saginaw Bay as part of a research project focused on monitoring the treatment of invasive Phragmites. The field team will be based in Ann Arbor and travel to various sites along Saginaw Bay multiple times throughout the summer, conducting nighttime frog/toad surveys and both dawn and dusk bird surveys. Willingness and ability to work long/unusual hours and travel extensively during the field season needed. Field housing will be provided when traveling around Saginaw Bay. Apart from fieldwork, the selected technician will aid the Principal Investigator with pre-field season logistics and planning, such as securing permission to access survey sites on private land, scheduling site visits, preparing field maps in ArcGIS, preparing field supplies, and assisting with data entry, QC and analysis. Excellent wetland bird ID skills required, previous point count experience strongly preferred. Applicants must be in good physical condition and able to work in wetland environments in muddy and occasionally hot/buggy conditions. Possess good organizational and data recording skills.
