Field Conservation Supervisor, Minnesota Zoo

The Minnesota Zoo seeks a highly motivated Field Conservation Supervisor to 
direct, expand, and supervise the Minnesota Zoo's field conservation projects, 
programs, and staff, to ensure that they fulfill the Zoo's Strategic Plan goals 
and objectives.  This position is located in the Minnesota Zoo's Conservation 
Division and reports to the Vice President for Conservation.

Job responsibilities:

*         Direct the Zoo's existing field conservation programs and research 
projects. Work with field conservation staff and partners to ensure the 
development of well-funded programs/projects that align with the Zoo's animal 
collection and strategic plans, and that ultimately help save wildlife.

*         Expand the Minnesota Zoo's field conservation programs and 
partnerships, to help fulfill the Zoo's vision of being a leader in saving 
wildlife.

*         Supervise field conservation staff so that applicable labor 
agreements are appropriately administered and staff effectively perform 
assigned job duties to achieve the annual objectives of the section.

*         Represent the Zoo's field conservation programs internally and 
externally, to ensure staff and public are informed, the Division's interests 
and needs are conveyed, and conservation is integrated Zoo-wide.

*         Manage budgets and travel for field conservation programs, to 
appropriately steward the Zoo's resources and maximize the effectiveness of the 
Zoo's field conservation programs.

Minimum qualifications

*         At least five years of professional experience in one or more of the 
following: a) Zoo conservation, curatorial, educational, veterinary, or animal 
management field; b) wildlife/conservation research; or c) 
wildlife/conservation program coordination or management

*         Ph.D. in Conservation Biology, Zoology, Ecology, Wildlife Management, 
or other related field from an accredited university

  *   Experience developing and leading (or co-leading) field conservation 
programs, as well as conducting field work
  *   Experience providing supervisory or lead-work direction to other 
employees, students, interns, or residents engaged in conservation, wildlife, 
or laboratory work
  *   Strong record of securing and administrating grants for research and/or 
conservation work
  *   Strong publication record, with first-author, peer-reviewed articles that 
are well-cited and/or published in relatively high-impact scientific journals
  *   Skill in current statistical analysis practices, including proficiency 
with R statistical software and programming
  *   Skill in mapping and spatial analysis techniques using Geographic 
Information Systems software
  *   Excellent communication skills, including experience writing for general 
audiences, as well as creating and delivering high-quality presentations to 
both scientific and general audiences
  *   Excellent editing skills and experience as a referee for scientific 
manuscript submissions and/or grant proposals
  *   Knowledge of commonly employed field techniques for studying wild 
animals, including transects, camera trapping, live trapping, noninvasive 
biological sampling, and GPS collaring

Preferred Qualifications
Applicants are not expected to meet all of these qualifications, but should 
address each of the following for which they qualify:

*         Experience working at or with accredited zoos

*         Experience working in a scientific laboratory setting

*         Experience managing a budget

*         Previous experience supervising employees

*         Knowledge of and/or experience with conservation planning techniques

*         Knowledge of and/or experience with Minnesota-based conservation 
issues, projects, conservation partners, and wildlife species

*         Experience with wildlife handling techniques

*         Experience conducting, developing, and/or directing field 
conservation programs in the United States AND other countries

*         Experience with conservation research AND applied conservation efforts

*         Possession of other skills that are currently underrepresented but 
may be of high value to the Minnesota Zoo's field conservation programs (please 
describe)

*         Has an existing collaboration with an organization/entity that 
already partners or could potentially partner with the Minnesota Zoo on a 
field-based conservation effort

*         Has an existing field conservation project that is of interest to the 
Minnesota Zoo and could continue at the Minnesota Zoo (but note that only a 
small percentage of this position's time is devoted to conducting one's own 
project/research)

Salary: $30.44-$43.75/hour, $63,559-$91,350 annually
