Position Title: Program Director

Reports To:   Director of NJ Audubon’s Cape May Bird Observatory

JOB DESCRIPTION:  The Program Director has duties primarily in the education 
branch of NJ  Audubon (NJA) and is the lead Cape May Bird Observatory (CMBO) 
staff person with respect to all CMBO programming including outdoor programs 
associated with large events (Spring Weekend, Fall Weekend, World Series of 
Birding).  The Program Director, in conjunction with NJA Research Department 
staff, oversees CMBO’s fall migration counts, and may organize and conduct 
other bird monitoring activities.  This position has wide-ranging 
responsibilities as a liaison to members and visitors and is the lead CMBO 
staff person in conjunction with the Mission Areas with respect to local 
conservation issues and interfacing with various land managers and stakeholders 
in southern NJ.  The Program Director oversees the Program Registrar to ensure 
efficient program registration and attendance record keeping.  Producing high 
quality written materials for print and web is an important element of this 
position.  He/she will take an active role in promoting NJA/CMBO as a 
membership-based conservation organization.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop and implement CMBO’s Weekly Walks, Field Trips, Boat Trips, Lectures, 
and School of Birding Workshops.  Includes recruiting, training and management 
of CMBO volunteer leaders and management of contract staff.  Includes promotion 
of these programs through Kestrel Express newsletter, on CMBO web site, through 
email blasts and social media.
Help implement CMBO’s annual major events, including organizing leaders for 
Cumberland Eagle Festival; participating as required in Spring Weekend & Fall 
Weekend; and organizing CMBO Century Run and/or participating on a CMBO team 
for WSB.
Work collaboratively with staff from the Nature Center of Cape May on joint 
programming to enhance the complete suite of programs offered by NJA in the 
Cape May region.
Inform and inspire members and the public, and promote birding, by producing 
written materials and photos for birdcapemay.org, NJA Magazine, and Kestrel 
Express.
Manage and edit the Peregrine Observer, the official journal of NJA Cape May 
Bird Observatory.
Engage in bird research and monitoring.  Help organize and implement CMBO’s 
three fall migration counts by hiring, training and supervising Interpretive 
Naturalists, George Myers Naturalist, and Migration Monitoring staff.  Organize 
twice annual Winter Marsh Raptor Survey and other bird monitoring activities.
In conjunction with NJA Mission Areas, actively engage in southern NJ 
conservation issues, especially ensuring bird-friendly management activities on 
public lands in Cape May County.
Assist Director of CMBO and VP of Education with grant writing as needed.
Education
Work with VP for Education and the statewide education team to develop and 
assess programs 
Maintain appropriate program outlines and materials.     
Oversee with the design and maintenance of exhibits and informational kiosks. 
Interact with other NJA staff to promote statewide programming initiatives. 
Volunteer Program
Maintain and oversee field trip assistants and Associate Naturalists.
Refine the NJA/CMBO Associate Naturalist program to train and cultivate the 
leaders of today and tomorrow.
Membership
Strive to increase NJA/CMBO membership base.
Community Relations and Promotion
Represent NJA/CMBO in the local community and nationwide, expanding NJA 
presence to increase awareness, support and participation.
Other
Prepare written reports, proposals and plans as required.
Attend center, department and NJA meetings and serve on committees.
Obtain and maintain certification for First Aid, CPR, and other public safety 
certification appropriate for the activities of the position.
Participate with sanctuary staff to adopt a “team” approach towards daily 
operations at the assigned center. 
Assume additional responsibilities as required.
Knowledge/Skills

Excellent oral and written skills. 
Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to accept direction and 
constructive criticism.
Expert level knowledge of NJ birds and other natural history subjects.
Ability to relate to a diverse range of stakeholders and exercise cultural 
competence and inclusion.
Punctual with effective time management skills.
Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office + web based utilities like Blogger) 
and other Social Media skills.
Flexibility to adjust hours to meet special needs of the department and the 
organization.
Qualifications
B.S. or M.S. in the sciences preferred. 
Demonstrated expert-level knowledge of natural history of NJ. 
Demonstrated experience developing and implementing interpretive programs.
Demonstrated writing skills – sample or prior publications may be required.  
Demonstrated supervisory ability. 

Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a vehicle in NJ.  
Must have the physical capacity to walk over uneven terrain for long distances, 
able to move materials and to lift 50 lbs. 

Start Date:  Approximately December 15, 2015.
Salary:  Competitive and commensurate with experience.
