Volunteer Assistants for Manakin Ecology and Behavior Study Location: Panama. Duration: approx. 2 months. Job Type: Volunteer Start date: March 10th, 2016. End date: May 1st, 2016 (end date flexible).
Job Description: I seek 1-2 field volunteers to work on behavioral research projects in Panama as part of a larger study on how habitat characteristics influence social structure and reproductive dynamics lek-mating Red-capped Manakins (Ceratopipra mentalis) and other tropical frugivorous birds. Fieldwork will include mist-netting and banding birds, re-sighting color-marked birds, behavioral observations, plant/fruit identification, insect surveys, and the work will take place on Pipeline Rd in Soberania National Park and the other half will occur across the Isthmus of Panama. Field crew will live in Gamboa, Panama. This work is in collaboration with the University of Wyoming and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. In addition to gaining experience in field skills, volunteers will be able to network with the international research community at the Smithsonian, design and implement an independent project, and Qualifications: B.A/B.S. degree in biology, some experience in bird identification and behavioral observation. English fluency required, Spanish a plus. Must be in good physical condition and be able to endure long field days in a tropical setting. An ideal candidate will have interest in animal behavior, tropical ecology, and gaining experience in avian research techniques including: canopy netting, and song analysis. Number of Openings: 1-2.
