The Plant Conservation Department at Red Butte Garden & Arboretum in Salt Lake City, Utah has an immediate opening for an Americorps field assistant to join our crew this summer. The crew member will conduct botanical field research for the purpose of rare and native species conservation, and will have the opportunity to travel throughout Utah from June-September while gaining skills in plant identification, seed collection, greenhouse care and data management.
Responsibilities: The crew member will assist with tasks including, but not limited to: data collection and seed collection of rare and endangered plant species, plant identification, bulk seed collecting as part of the Seeds of Success program, data entry and organization, seed processing, greenhouse plant propagation, mapping and GIS management. Opportunities exist for assisting the department with educational outreach, photography, technical and non-technical writing, and special events at the garden. This position requires long field days working out of doors and hiking through rugged terrain, and may require some overnight camping (personal camping equipment is not provided). Timeline: 6-months (June – November); 900 hours total starting June 1st, 2016. Start date is flexible but preferably will be no later than the 10th of June. Typical field schedule consists of 4 consecutive 10-hour days, Monday-Thursday. Longer hours may be accumulated during field season and compensated with time off during the off season. Compensation: -6-month living stipend of $6,634, awarded bimonthly by the Americorps program/Utah Conservation Corps. -An education award of $2,865 is provided upon successful completion of the 900-hour commitment. -Per diem and camping reimbursements will be provided for all days spent in the field.
