Position Summary* Part-time (45%) Research Technician position (funded for up to 3 years) responsible for oversight, running, and maintenance of an Illumina MiSeq genome sequencer, under the supervision of the genomics core facility laboratory director. This position will interface with laboratory users (mainly graduate students and faculty members), perform sample preparation for DNA sequencing experiments, and operate/maintain DNA sequencing equipment. This technician will run full-service next generation sequencing experiments, and assist with operating/maintaining the sequencer. The technician will summarize data on projects under direct supervision of the GTAC Director and ordinarily will not supervise technical assistants. Clerical work will include conduct of supplies inventories, ordering supplies, maintaining user accounts and basic bookkeeping, keeping track of user requests and experiments, maintaining accurate and detailed records of experimental data and protocols. Assignments will involve execution of procedures designated by others, and the technician will receive close technical training and assistance. Minimum Qualifications* Thorough knowledge of research techniques, including the planning of studies and investigations, determining variables, developing bibliographical and other sources of data, and preparation of research reports; general knowledge of statistical principles and procedures, including methods of collecting statistical data, simple correlation methods, time series analyses, analysis of frequency series, sampling techniques, and construction of index numbers; general knowledge of sources of information on social, economic, and population trends in California. Ability to prepare questionnaires and other survey instruments; ability to gather, compile, and analyze research data, and to present data in tabular, graphic, and pictorial form, ability to prepare and work clear and comprehensive reports; capacity for independent and creative thinking and writing on research and statistical problems; ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of a small team. Graduate study in the social sciences, economics, mathematics, statistics, public or business administration or engineering may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. Equivalent of Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) and 2 years of laboratory technician experience. Familiarity with next generation sequencing library preparation, DNA quantification and library quality protocols, excellent organizational skills. This experience must include working independently without direct supervision on day-to-day tasks. Strong communication (written, oral) skills required. Basic computer skills and email communication are required. Interpersonal and organizational skills are essential. Must have experience with basic Molecular Biology techniques: contamination control and sterile technique, pipetting, DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, quantitative PCR, etc. Preferred Qualifications Familiarity with Illumina library preparation protocols and running Illumina instruments is preferred. Prior experience with data analysis pathways (e.g. QIIME, Unix/Linux operating systems, and Perl) a plus. Experience working directly with students and other scientists in a busy laboratory or other research setting very advantageous. Completion of Master's degree and 1 year of laboratory technician experience. Environmental/Physical/Special Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds from one area of the laboratory to another. Must be able to comply with all institutional safety policies including Universal Precautions and OSHA standards when handling hazardous chemicals, which may also require wearing common protective garments such as gloves, eye protection, lab coat, etc. Some procedures may require use of a fume hood or biosafety cabinet. Excellent manual dexterity is needed to conduct precision laboratory protocols using clean and sterile techniques. The work schedule for this position is flexible but the successful applicant must be able and willing to adjust to project requirements and schedules.
