The State of Alaska, Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation, is recruiting for a Wildlife Biologist II/III flexibly staffed position located in Kotzebue, Alaska. This position is open to All Applicants. This position is responsible for research and management for one of the largest caribou herds in North America: the Western Arctic caribou herd (WAH) in the northwestern and arctic region of Alaska (Region 5). This position offers an unusual opportunity to manage a world class wildlife resource, and participate in a diverse array of wildlife projects in a large, remote and scenic portion of northern Alaska. We are looking for the following Desired Strengths: Wildlife Biologist III 1. Broad, comprehensive knowledge of wildlife management principles and techniques, as applied to arctic caribou populations in Region 5 2. Proven ability to balance making independent decisions while closely coordinating with supervisors 3. Demonstrated ability to design, plan, and implement programs to collect biological information for sound and practical wildlife management of large mammal species 4. Demonstrated experience with capturing, immobilizing and performing physical examinations of large mammal species and/or in nuisance wildlife situations 5. Demonstrated experience with collecting wildlife data via aerial and ground surveys and preparing data summaries based on the information collected 6. Demonstrated experience with monitoring and evaluating the status of wildlife populations, including statistical analysis of results and communicating information or recommendations through written or oral reports 7. Experience with managing multiple budgets and completing project summaries and reports 8. Experience coordinating with staff from other state, Native and federal agencies to resolve complex or controversial wildlife management problems 9. Experience with answering public inquires on complex issues or regulations through oral or written communication (i.e., explaining trapping/hunting regulations, processes for obtaining a hunting permit, public access, etc.), in routine and confrontational situations 10. Experience working with print, radio, and television media inquiries 11. Experience preparing informational materials. 12. Participating in informational or educational presentations for Board of Game, advisory committees and at public meetings 13. Demonstrated experience handling firearms in dangerous situations 14.
