The Department of Biological Sciences at Moravian College invites applications
for a tenure-track appointment at the assistant professor level beginning Fall
2017. Applicants must have their Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment.

We are looking for a biologist whose expertise complements that of current
members of the department. The successful candidate will have a research
interest in some area of invertebrate zoology and will ideally have proven
ability with some aspect of quantitative or computational biology (e.g. GIS or
bioinformatics).

Success as a faculty member at Moravian is evaluated on the basis of teaching,
scholarship, service, and student engagement. All applicants who provide strong
evidence demonstrating their ability to flourish in a small liberal arts
college environment will be seriously considered.

Teaching is paramount at Moravian. Each semester, faculty in the sciences
typically teach two lecture courses (3 hours each per week) and two laboratory
sections (3 hours each per week).

The new faculty hire will be responsible for teaching
• a portion of the introductory zoology course (BIOL 112) for biology majors
• BIOL 225 (Invertebrate Zoology)
• a 300-level course in an area of the applicant's specialty
• other courses depending on college and department needs and the candidate's
interests (such as quantitative or computational biology)

Scholarship at Moravian is evaluated in many ways, but carrying out research
with undergraduates is critical. In addition to opportunities for students to
participate in independent research projects under faculty supervision as part
of their coursework (BIOL381, Independent Study), Moravian has two programs for
such research: SOAR and Honors. The candidate's research statement should
explicitly address how undergraduates will be able to participate in the
applicant's research program. Startup funding is available for this position.

Moravian is a member of LVAIC (the Lehigh Valley Association of Independent
Colleges); this is a consortium of 6 colleges all located in the Lehigh Valley,
and consists of Cedar Crest College, DeSales University, Lafayette College,
Lehigh University, Moravian College, and Muhlenberg College. The proximity of
so many institutions of higher education offers numerous research collaboration
possibilities.

Service to the institution takes a variety of forms, including committee
participation and student advising. We are looking for teachers and scholars
who will actively contribute to both their discipline and the broader
intellectual community at Moravian.

TO APPLY:

Applicants should provide a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a statement of
teaching philosophy, and a statement of research interests. In their
application, candidates should address their interest in working with
undergraduates in a liberal arts environment that emphasizes close
student-faculty interaction and provide evidence of demonstrated or potential
excellence in undergraduate instruction.

The strongest candidates will be asked for copies of transcripts and evidence
of teaching effectiveness, but not until we complete our initial review; please
do not send these materials with your initial application. The candidate’s
materials (cover letter, cv, and two statements) should be sent electronically
as a single .pdf file to: search.biol...@moravian.edu.

In addition, please arrange to have three letters of reference submitted
separately (ideally as .pdf files) to the same address. For questions about the
position, please contact Prof. Christopher Jones at the “search.biology”
address above.

Review of all completed applications will begin September 30, 2016, and
continue until the position is filled.

All positions are subject to budget availability.
