University of Alaska Anchorage is recruiting an *Aquatic Ecologist* to
manage the Aquatic Ecology Program and to serve as PI on several
extramurally-funded projects related to climate change and fisheries.



Alaska Center for Conservation Science (ACCS) is a center for research,
education, and scholarship at UAA that is committed to providing the
public, industry, and agency partners with information to facilitate
effective biological conservation and management of the state's natural
resources. Our faculty and staff conduct basic and applied research, serve
a wide range of data to the public, offer professional services, and
provide educational opportunities.



Job Duties

·        10% Participates in and organizes professional and scientific
meetings. Communicates research findings to public audiences; provides
scientific expertise and data to state and federal agencies; serves on
expert panels to achieve consensus on natural resource issues; and serves
as peer reviewer for research proposals, scientific journals, and
scientific reports.

·        10% Supervises and manages other research staff, including
research professionals, technicians, graduate students, undergraduates, and
interns. Coordinates the efforts of staff members to achieve research
goals, assigns and prioritizes project tasks, holds others accountable to
ensure accurate and timely results, and revises assignments as necessary to
ensure project goals are met. Includes recruiting new research staff when
needed.

·        20% Uses expert-level knowledge of research methods, analytical
procedures, and scientific writing to produce refereed journal publications
and research reports. Includes development and application of theoretical
and mathematical models, the application advanced statistical and other
analytical tools, and synthesis of research conducted by other scientists.

·        30% Manages the ACCS Aquatic Ecology research program, including
strategic planning and serving as principal investigator for multiple state
and federal research projects. Assumes management responsibility for
multiple budgets and for project deliverables and deadlines. Represents the
Aquatic Ecology program for inquiries or data requests.

·        30% Secures extramural funding for the continued operation and
development of the ACCS Aquatic Ecology program. Designs research projects
and writes proposals to secure funding for future research projects
including problem definition, designing processes/tools for gathering
information, developing budgets, and setting research trajectories for
competitive funding opportunities. Fosters ties with state and federal
agencies to secure research contracts that advance agency goals.
Collaboration with university and agency scientists is a key element.



Typical Education or Training:

M.S. or M.A. in biology, aquatic ecology, environmental science, zoology,
fisheries, or conservation biology. PhD is preferred. Five years' research
experience in a field relevant to the ecology of Alaska's aquatic
ecosystems.
