Job Description: NAT RES RESEARCH TECHNICIAN - LTE
70% A. Field data collection. 
A1. Timber cruising for tree basal area by species 
A2. Assessment of tree saplings and seedlings by species 
A3. Herbaceous plant assessments 
A4. Establishment of study infrastructure 

20% B. Laboratory work. 
B1. Establish cruise points in mapping software 
B2. Data entry, quality assurance and control 

10% C. Soil collection and processing. 
C1. Collection of soils from study sites 
C2. Drying and processing soils for analysis

Knowledge Required: The Wisconsin DNR will be hiring forestry technicians 
within the Division of Forestry, Forest Science section. These positions will 
focus on quantifying the amount and type of forest regeneration after a variety 
of silviculture techniques. Work will include forest understory assessments, 
tree basal area measurements, plant species identification, and study plot 
establishment. The majority of the work will be outside in the forests. 
Applicants will be expected to work in a wide range of weather conditions and 
be in good physical condition to handle daily hiking with gear. Preferred start 
date is mid-April, but some flexibility in the start date depending on the 
availability of qualified applicants. The position will be based out of the 
Wisconsin DNR Rhinelander Service Center, but will require extensive travel 
across Wisconsin. Independent travel in state vehicles is required so the 
successful candidate must possess a valid driver's license.

on April 17, 2015, prior to your start date at the property. Start date for 
students currently enrolled in classes may be later. 
A well-qualified applicant would have interest in pursuing a career in the 
field of natural resources. Applicants should have some experience in forest 
cruising and identification of tree species native to northern Wisconsin. 
Additional preference will be given to applicants who are familiar with GPS 
navigation and ArcGIS. Applicants will be expected to work independently and 
have experience with Excel and basic Windows programs.
