Graduate assistantship in Pacific lamprey conservation and management at the
University of Idaho.

I am seeking applicants to fill a graduate assistantship (MS or Ph.D.) studying
migration behavior and dam passage of adult Pacific lamprey in the Columbia
River. Students can be matriculated through one of several disciplinary and
interdisciplinary graduate programs (Fish and Wildlife Sciences, Water
Resources, or Environmental Sciences) and will be associated with a research
consortium motivated by questions about the ecology and migration of fishes
(https://www.uidaho.edu/cnr/ferl).

The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated and collaborative individual
with a BS/MS in a relevant field of study (e.g. fisheries, biology, ecology &
evolution), with coursework in chemistry and statistics, field experience in
aquatic or fish ecology, and desire to apply interdisciplinary approaches to
questions in fish and aquatic ecology in conservation and management settings.
The ability to work both independently and collaboratively will be essential.
Competitive stipends with full tuition waivers are available. Students may
arrive spring or summer on a research assistantship to participate in field
work during 2017 and fully matriculate in the fall of 2017. Structure of the
thesis will include components below, with substantial flexibility to develop
independent components:

1) evaluation of effectiveness of Lamprey Passage Systems installed at
Bonneville Dam intended to enhance adult passage success using radio- and PIT
telemetry.
2) evaluation of the effects of the new Lamprey Passage Systems on co-migrating
adult salmon and steelhead listed under the Endangered Species Act using
acoustic camera (DIDSON) observations.
3) evaluation of Pacific lamprey behavior and physiology in experimental flumes
to test design effectiveness and the relationship between lamprey passage
success and swimming endurance.

Projects include substantial potential for development of independent research
topics as well as collaborative interaction with regional researchers,
fisheries biologists, and managers (USACE, NOAA-Fisheries, and Tribal agencies).

The positions will remain open until suitable candidates are selected; initial
review of applications will begin 20 March 2017.

How to Apply: Please email the following to Chris Caudill
(caud...@uidaho.edu<mailto:caud...@uidaho.edu>): (1) your resume or CV; (2) a
letter of interest, including research interests, professional goals and prior
experience, and (3) contact information for three references. Prior to
acceptance, students must also apply to the University of Idaho College of
Graduate Studies (see www.grad.uidaho.edu<http://www.grad.uidaho.edu/>).
