We invite your participation in a symposium proposed for this year’s annual meeting of the American Fisheries Society (20-24 August in Tampa, FL).
Understanding Impacts of Climate Change on Fish and Fisheries Session at American Fisheries Society Meeting—August 20-24, 2017, Tampa, FL Session organizers: Lisa Kerr and Kathy Mills Climate change is expected to impact freshwater and marine ecosystems, fish populations, and fisheries in a variety of ways. Shifts in the distribution and productivity of fish species have been observed in response to gradual warming and extreme events. Responses have varied among species and over different spatial and temporal scales, and both life history (e.g. spatial contingents, behavioral ecomorphs) and genetic diversity are known to be key attributes shaping the resilience or vulnerability of fish species in the face of anthropogenic changes. Differential responses of fish species to climate change also impact fisheries, fishery management, and fishing communities. Understanding how climate conditions may affect stock assessments, harvest control rules, and socio-economic outcomes as well as adaptation strategies that may support resilient fisheries in the context of climate change are all rapidly advancing research areas. Projecting responses of fish populations and fisheries to climate change requires integrating diverse information from fields of climate science, fish biology and ecology, spatial ecology, population dynamics, and social sciences. This session invites a wide range of talks across multiple disciplines that address questions related to species exposure and response to climate change, aspects of species resilience in a changing climate, and ecological and socio-economic implications of climate-related changes in marine resource populations. The objective of this session is to bring together scientists working in diverse fields and aquatic systems to improve our shared understanding of the impacts of climate change on fish and fisheries. If you are interested in participating, please provide a tentative presentation title to Lisa Kerr (lk...@gmri.org) or Kathy Mills (kmi...@gmri.org) before March 10, 2017. Additionally, abstracts must be submitted via the meeting website (https://afsannualmeeting.fisheries.org/) before March 17, 2017.
