The Holdo lab in the Odum School of Ecology at the University of Georgia seeks a full-time research technician (with benefits). The technician will support a range of collaborative projects in the areas of savanna tree-grass dynamics, ecophysiology and demography. The position is based in Athens, GA, and will include a wide range of duties in the lab, greenhouse and field, including field research associated with ongoing projects in South Africa and Zimbabwe for weeks at time. The position will include the following responsibilities: setting up and running greenhouse and laboratory studies (e.g., measuring plant functional trait data), analyzing samples in the lab (e.g., cryogenic distillation for isotope analyses, tree ring analysis, sample drying and weighing), organization and analysis of existing datasets, assistance with student research projects, ordering lab and field supplies, setting up lab equipment, and field work (experimental setup, data collection, and supervision of field assistants). The ideal candidate will be able to work independently in the field and should be willing and able to acquire a range of new skills. A key component of the position will be the development of new field and laboratory techniques for quantifying water use and growth in trees and grasses (e.g., using thermal imaging and time-lapse photography) for model parameterization. Required qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in ecology, forestry, biology or related field and field research experience, particularly in the area of plant ecophysiology (e.g., experience with instruments such as gas exchange analyzers and pressure chambers), attention to detail and well organized. Preferred qualifications: Master’s degree in one of the above, R or other coding experience, good quantitative skills, experience with dataloggers and/or environmental sensors, ability to drive a stick-shift, soldering, or a willingness to learn these skills.
