POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER: WOODPECKER DEMOGRAPHY Position Description The Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society at Oregon State University is soliciting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher to work in the laboratory of Dr. Jim Rivers (http://people.forestry.oregonstate.edu/jim-rivers/). The incumbent will lead a collaborative research project that is evaluating woodpecker demographic response to wildfire and forest management in the rugged and scenic Crater Lake area of southern Oregon. The primary research focus will be on collecting data on nest success and post-fledging survival and movement, with an emphasis on species of conservation importance (e.g., Black-backed Woodpecker). The development of additional research by the incumbent that enhances core project objectives is expected. The position involves extensive field work during the breeding season (April-August) in a remote location with the remainder of the year spent at Oregon State University. Appointment will be intended for a term of one (1) year, with renewal of an additional year based upon a satisfactory performance review and available funding. Start date is negotiable but no later than mid-March 2018. Salary is $48,000-$52,000/year (depending on experience) and position includes health insurance.
Minimum/ Required Qualifications - Ph.D. in ornithology, animal ecology, or a closely related field - Demonstrated competence in leading field studies of bird demographic rates (i.e., nest survival, post-fledging survival) - Demonstrated competence in planning, designing, executing, and coordinating research - Professional expertise in handling, tagging, and obtaining biological samples from wild birds - Experience quantifying space use of birds via VHF radio-tracking - Ability to traverse steep, rugged, and/or uneven terrain while carrying up to 25 pounds in all weather conditions - Computing skills including statistical software (e.g., R), spatial analysis software (e.g., ArcGIS, Google Earth), and database programs - Proficiency to independently write scientific publications for peer-reviewed journals - Strong communication skills, including excellent command of the English language, that allows for working effectively as a member of a research team Preferred Qualifications - Experience conducting demographic research with forest-nesting woodpeckers - Proficiency with safe tree climbing practices - Knowledge and experience with forest management practices of the Pacific Northwest - A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity Application Instructions Applicants should create a single PDF or Word file that contains (1) a cover letter addressing qualifications as they relate to the specific duties and qualifications for the position; (2) a full-length curriculum vitae (CV); (3) the name and contact information (email and telephone) of three references who may be contacted; and (4) two examples of peer-reviewed publications; this document should be emailed to Dr. Jim Rivers (jim.riv...@oregonstate.edu) with "Woodpecker Postdoc Position" in the subject line.
