The U.S. Forest Service Pacific Southwest Research Station anticipates 
filling up to two temporary positions for the summer and fall of 2018 
(start and end dates somewhat flexible and an extended season may be an 
option, depending on the workload) to assist with research projects in 
silviculture and forest ecology. The positions will be either at the GS-5 
level ($16.00/hour) or/and at the GS-4 ($14.30/hour). Selection is 
dependent on qualifications. 

Job description: Successful applicants will be collecting data for several 
research projects on several National Forests in northern California. 
General duties include: (a) collect height, diameter, and other tree 
measurements for several long-term silviculture projects in northern 
California, (b) collect tree cores using an increment borer, and (c) assist 
with repeated measurements of a soil and tree seedling study. Camping will 
be necessary, and some overnight trips may last for 4-5 days. Employees are 
paid for federal holidays and accrue vacation time (4 hours per two week 
pay period). Transportation from duty station to work locations will be 
provided. 

Qualifications: 
•       Ability to identify forest trees and understory shrubs to species 
is desired, but training will be provided for those not familiar with the 
local flora 
•       Must be physically fit and capable of hiking long distances over 
difficult terrain 
•       May be required to backpack for extended periods carrying a 40-60 
pound pack. 
•       Enjoys being outdoors; can deal with heat, inclement weather and 
poison oak 
•       Valid driver’s license
