The Michigan State University Soil Biology lab is in need of 2 full time but
temporary lab technicians, starting this spring through fall 2018, with
possibility of continuation into spring 2019. The positions will include
both lab and field based research focused on plant-soil-microbe interactions.
Research in the Soil Biology Lab generally focuses on how soil
microorganisms control soil organic matter formation and break-down and
nutrient cycling in agroecosystems. More information about the lab can be
found here: (http://tiemann.psm.msu.edu/). The successful candidates for
these positions will be expected to coordinate sampling and analyses for two
different funded projects, one focused on plant-microbe-nutrient
interactions in biofuel cropping systems on degraded lands and the other
impacts of biochar application on microbial communities, nutrient cycling
and Christmas tree growth. Work on these projects will provide valuable,
basic laboratory skills and more specifically, experience conducting a wide
variety of soil analyses including extracellular enzyme assays, soil DNA
extraction, quantification and sequencing, soil nutrient and chemical
analyses and soil physical and chemical fractionations. Field work will
include soil sampling, GIS data collection, plant trait analyses and
greenhouse gas measurements.
The most qualified and desirable applicants will have some previous research
experience. Preference will also be given to applicants who are available to
start work by May 1 and those that can commit to full-time employment for a
minimum of 6 months. Strong candidates will also possess the following
attributes: creativity, independence, and the desire to learn new things;
excellent communication skills; and demonstration of excellent
organizational skills.
A start date of May 1, 2018 is preferred, but alternative start dates will
be considered and should be noted in the cover letter. Positions are
available for a minimum of 6-9 months, with possibility of extension for an
additional 9 months. All questions about the positions should be submitted
to: Dr. Lisa Tiemann (ltiem...@msu.edu). Applications should be submitted by
March 16 for full consideration, but will be accepted until the position is
filled.
Applications should include a single pdf file containing:
1) a brief cover letter (no more than 2-pages) that highlights past
research accomplishments, describes future career and research goals and
gives examples of organizational skills;
2) a curriculum vitae;
3) names and contact information for three references.
