Dear Colleagues: Recently, someone else and I were examining some adult insects and noticed that the ocelli are mounted in cylindrical protuberances. My colleague noticed that some of those protuberances appear higher than others and I agree. We will be doing some more imaging asap.
The idea occurred to my colleague that the ocelli may be retractable/telescoping. Do any of you know of such cases in insects or other animals? I know that vision is related to the environment in which animals live and, in the case we are examining, such modifications (if real) may have a functional significance.
