2206BR Job Description The SFWMD Coastal Ecosystem Section is seeking a Lead Scientist with Systems Ecology experience to support the District’s goal of managing freshwater inflow to estuaries and assessing the ecological effects. The incumbent will be responsible for assessing our current research programs, integrating the results into a systems level assessment, and identifying gaps in our understanding of system function. Major responsibilities include evaluating currently available data, statistical analysis, report writing, and designing and executing research projects. The incumbent will be expected to work closely with other scientists to integrate their work into a broader ecological assessment that includes ecological modeling. The work will require statistical analysis and synthesis of data, assistance with ecological model development, publication of findings in peer-reviewed journal articles, and presentation of scientific information at meetings and conferences. The position also provides technical support and review of estuarine science, water quality, monitoring design and optimizations, and external assessments. The position will serve as a primary author on the Coastal Ecosystem chapter in the South Florida Environmental Report. The successful candidate will be expected to coordinate with technical staff from other sections of the District and other state and federal agencies on estuarine science. Field work from boats is required. Familiarity with estuarine sampling techniques and QA/QC procedures is a must. Ability to tow and operate small watercraft is a plus. Employment Guidelines This position may be filled as Senior Scientist based on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience. Lead Scientist: Typically has Masters' Degree, Ph.D. preferred, in Natural or Physical Sciences, or other related field and 8+ years' experience that demonstrates measurable career progression within scientific discipline that can be applied to support the District's strategic goals and objectives. Experience in tropical/subtropical environments, especially south Florida, is preferred. Senior Scientist: Typically has Master's Degree in Natural or Physical Sciences and 6+ years' experience that demonstrates measurable career progression within scientific discipline that can be applied to support the District's strategic goals and objectives. Physical Requirements/Working Environment Due to the District's response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies, depending on assigned emergency response role.
