A two-year postdoctoral scholar position is available with Michael
Springborn in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy at the
University of California, Davis. The postdoc will be co-advised by Andrew
Liebhold of the U.S. Forest Service (USFS). The position is part of a
USFS-funded initiative on “Global Socioeconomic Drivers of Insect
Invasions”. The postdoc will work closely with an international,
interdisciplinary working group of economists, ecologists and entomologists
collaborating in the analysis of historical insect establishments worldwide
in relation to economic and biogeographic factors. The working group is
sponsored by the National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC)
located in Annapolis, MD.

The central goal of this project is to explore the socioeconomic drivers of
historical insect invasions around the world to better understand the
pathways by which species have been transported and the forces responsible
for these invasions. We will also identify how historical implementation of
biosecurity policies have affected these processes. Ultimately, this
information should provide critical information for improving policies
aimed at minimizing future invasions as globalization expands trade and
travel over time.

The postdoctoral scholar will take a leading role in developing conceptual
models and conducting empirical analysis. Requirements include: (1) a PhD
in economics, applied mathematics, quantitative ecology or a related field,
(2) strong quantitative skills with experience in statistical modeling and
inference, and (3) proven written and verbal communication skills.
Particular consideration will be given to applicants with skills in one or
more of the following: general equilibrium modeling, trade modeling,
network analysis, risk analysis, biosecurity analysis, biogeographic
studies, data visualization, statistical programming, and maximum
likelihood estimation.

The preferred start date is fall of 2018 or as soon as possible; the exact
start date is flexible. The appointment length is 2 years. To apply, please
send: (1) a CV, (2) a cover letter including anticipated start date, (3) a
statement of research experience and interests as they relate to the
position, (4) one sample publication, and (5) contact information for three
references. Review of applicants will begin September 21, 2018 and continue
until the position is filled. Email all application materials to Michael
Springborn, mspringb...@ucdavis.edu, with the subject “Application: drivers
of invasion postdoc”. Informal inquires also welcome.
