A joint PhD opportunity is available with the University of Leeds and the
Southern
University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), a new university in Shenzhen,
China.
The student will work with Dr. Alan Grainger from the University of Leeds and
Associate Professor Luke Gibson from SUSTech.

The research project will focus on the forest transition, and specifically
examine
implications for biodiversity and carbon emissions as deforestation is balanced
with
reforestation. Research will comprise a pantropical meta-analysis, as well as a
detailed
examination within a specific country or region. Most research will be
computer-based,
but there might also be opportunities for field surveys.

The PhD will commence in September 2019. The first 15 months will be spent at
the
University of Leeds, and the remainder will be spent at SUSTech. For the first
15
months at the University of Leeds, stipend is 14,000 GPB per year, and tuition
is
covered. At SUSTech, stipend is 60,000-80,000 CNY per year, and tuition is
10,000
CNY per year. The resulting PhD degree will be awarded by the University of
Leeds.

Applicants must have:
1. A Master’s degree in ecology or related field (or, in special circumstances,
a
Bachelor’s degree with Honors)
2. Previous experience with ecological modelling
