Faculty of Geosciences, Utrecht University The Netherlands The Faculty of Geosciences offers education and research concerning the geosphere, biosphere, atmosphere and anthroposphere. With a population of 2,200 students (BSc and MSc) and 575 staff, the faculty is a strong and challenging organisation. The Faculty is organised in four Departments: Innovation and Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences, Physical geography, and Human Geography and Urban and Regional Planning.
The Section Economic Geography is part of the Department of Human Geography and Urban & Regional Planning, and consists of 7 tenured staff members, 4 post-docs and 7 PhD students. Besides teaching activities, members of the Section Economic Geography are engaged in the research program Economic Evolution in Space. This research program aims to develop theoretically and empirically an evolutionary approach in economic geography. Topics include: the evolution of spatial strategies of firms, the spatial evolution of sectors and networks, and the evolution of urban and regional economies. This program has been rated as the best in the field of economic geography in the Netherlands during the period 2000-2006 by the Research Assessment Exercise. Assistant professor in Economic Geography (F/M) Job description The candidate will contribute to the further advancement of the research program on Evolutionary Economic Geography, initiate and coordinate research activities of all individual researchers that are part of this program, and acquire external research finance. The candidate will take part in the teaching activities of the Section Economic Geography, both at the undergraduate and graduate level. Qualifications Candidates are required to be high potentials, which should be visible in their research and teaching record. Prerequisites are: a PhD in the field of economics or geography; a research record in the field of evolutionary economics; a strong interest in applying evolutionary insights into the field of economic geography; and experience in quantitative approaches. Candidates should also have the potential to acquire grants from external agencies like the European Science Foundation or the Dutch Scientific Council (NWO). They should be ambitious scholars who like to combine research with serious teaching obligations. Furthermore, they should be team players and posses excellent communicative skills. Terms of employment We offer a temporary, full-time employment contract for a duration of two years. The salary ranges (depending on track record) from 3,195.- to 4,970.- gross per month. The salary is supplemented with an annual holiday bonus of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8,3% per year.
