*Purpose of Position*

Macalester College, founded in 1874, is a distinguished residential liberal
arts college with a full-time enrollment of just over 2,000 students who
represent approximately 80 countries. Macalester is nationally recognized
for its long-standing commitment to academic excellence, internationalism,
multiculturalism, and civic engagement. Macalester’s mission is lived out
through the classroom as well as in the engagement of its students, faculty
and staff in the local community and world at large. Approximately 60% of
Macalester students study away and over 90% are active in civic engagement
before graduating.

The International Center, which supports domestic and international study
away, is housed within Macalester’s Institute for Global Citizenship (IGC).
The IGC fosters global citizenship by advancing scholarship, reflection,
and ethical action in our local, national and international communities.
The areas of the IGC (International Center, Civic Engagement Center,
Internship Program and Lilly Program) work in a synergistic manner to
provide meaningful local, national and international immersive educational
experiences for students. The IGC works with faculty, staff and students
from across campus on collaborative programs to deepen learning and action
for a life of global citizenship.

The Director of the International Center (IC) is responsible for overall
strategy development, elaboration of new programming modalities, and
implementation and management of a study away portfolio that is relevant
and inspiring to as many students as possible while ensuring maximum value.
The Director, as the focal point for college-wide involvement in study
away, fosters highly functional and collaborative relationships within the
IGC, with on-campus stakeholders and international partners. The Director
establishes and maintains relevant policies and systems to ensure
transparency, efficiency, and consistently high-quality and diverse
programs. The Director reports directly to the Dean of the IGC and manages
a staff of 4 and a team of student workers.

 *Qualifications*

Required: Masters in comparative education, international education or
other related fields. At least seven-years of experience in international
education at a college or university. Excellent budget management and
personnel supervision skills. Exceptional communication and partnership
skills.

Preferred: PhD in comparative education, international education or other
related fields. Experience leading study away activities within a liberal
arts context.

Additional info: Experience with developing and implementing international
education programs; demonstrated application of knowledge of inter-cultural
competency theory and research.

 *Responsibilities*

1) Strategic planning and new program development (30%): The Director
provides leadership through strategic visioning, planning and
implementation of a high-quality portfolio. He/she leads exploration and
roll-out of new program structures, including incorporation of internship
and civic engagement opportunities, exchange programs, Macalester semester
programs, and short-term faculty-led programs. The Director leads
assessment and continual improvement of current policies and programs. The
Director works closely within the IGC teams and with campus stakeholders to
ensure wide participation in and support for the activities of the IC. As a
member of the IGC leadership team, the Director also participates in
guiding and supporting the activities of the Institute as a whole.

2) Programmatic management (25%):
a. Personnel management: The Director manages a team of 4 staff and
numerous student workers; ensuring efficient operations of the team. The
Director provides continuous mentorship and enables the professional growth
of the team.
b. Budget management: The Director is responsible for planning and managing
the budget for all activities related to study away; with expenditures
reflecting the priorities of the College for the high quality programs
within budget realities.
c. Administrative oversight: The Director leads the efficient operation of
the International Center’s activities and all aspects of coordinating study
away experiences for students and faculty. The Director oversees the
continual refinement and implementation of risk management procedures, in
collaboration with College leadership.
d. Campus collaboration: The Director collaborates closely with faculty and
other stakeholders on campus, nurturing the college-wide involvement in
study away. The Director convenes the Study Away Review Committee (SARC),
is an active member of the Crisis Team for Off-Campus Study, and
participates in other committees and panels, as needed.

3) Student advising (25%): The Director is responsible for the coordination
of all student advising across the IC team, and directly advises a sub-set
of students representing selected academic programs. The Director leads the
development, implementation and monitoring of activities to support
pre-departure and re-entry.

4) Communications (15%): The Director leads the development and
implementation of a communications strategy for the IC and its activities;
including oversight of website content, information for students, parents,
faculty, college leadership, partner programs, and exchange programs.
He/she ensures that IC policies are documented and accessible.

5) Other duties (5%)
