Descriptions below: Workshop #1 - Saturdays Title: Liberatory Methods for Investigating and Generating Non-Capitalist / Anti-Colonial Social Power Dates: September 28th- November 23rd, 2024 Time: 10am-12pm Mexico City Time Brief Description: Capitalism / Coloniality depends upon the normalization of racialized, hetero-patriarchal, binary ideologies forged in the structural violences of hierarchy that limit access to all that is necessary to create well-being as individuals and as collectives. The way that knowledge is created, the categories and compartmentalizations required divide what is considered knowledge from that which is considered myth, gossip, backwards, worthless, cultural anachronism, etc. implies the devaluation of all knowledge and practice that is not euro-capital-colonial-centric has required decades and generations of indoctrination, violence and dispossession to achieve. This workshop is focused on privileging and strengthening the practices and methods used to create, value, and recognize the experience / knowledge that is created through the lives and histories of people whose expression has been undermined by myriad forms of oppression, negation and gaslighting. We will look at how the persistent relationships among people, territory and non-human others have been devalued in Capitalist / Colonial systems and as such the very existence of all life is in peril. On the other hand, the persistence of relationships as relationality, comunalidad, and non-capitalist economic systems have also been the first-line of resistance, perseverance and creation of other ways of doing and being life. As scholars and activists we have a responsibility to break away from hierarchical structures of knowledge creation and practice while embracing the many forms of knowing and being that are the majority forms of existence. However, that economic history is not common knowledge. Non-capitalist economies intertwined with forms of governance and society abounded. Empires, federations, regions and communities composed and coordinated autoctonous economic systems; some of which persist to this day. The wide variety of practices and underlying philosophies engendered massive diversity in how people created abundance and wrestled with precarity. Ranging from collective practices such as minka, ayni, faena, trueque, mutual aid, barter, potlatch, sacred songs, collective forms of work, celebration, etc. to differing forms of commercialization, imperialism, slavery and blood offerings. While on the one hand, it feels like we will drown in the existential crisis posed by capitalism, on the other hand, more and more people are joining the struggle to decolonize and in so doing, are shifting how we create value and through practice are changing how we experience each other and the Earth itself. This workshop brings together economic histories from across the Americas with the intention of looking at how these geographies have realized different forms of social organization and efforts to create well-being across time and space. Many indigenous economic practices have persisted in spite of genocide and epistemicide. Because of their persistence, first nations communities marginalized by capitalism and coloniality were able to ensure the continuity of their bloodlines and episteme in general. For example, community economic practices from the African continent were brought to the Americas during the forced enslavement and commercialization of racialized bodies. These practices of well-being were key to generational survival in spite of centuries of extreme violence justified in the institutionalization of whiteness. In learning about our economic history we can pick and choose what practices we want to preserve and what practices ultimately damage our relationships. As we work to decolonize our present and future it is important to know our history and the wide array of ways of doing economic interactions. Many economic systems were very successful while others held high costs for the majority of the population. For the most part these economies were collectivist; based in many forms of decision-making and knowledge exchange. We hope to debate, explore, question and practice the first economies of the Abya Yala, Turtle Island, Mikinoc Waajew, Cem Anáhuac and all of the ways that we might know what is now called the Americas. Este taller se centra en privilegiar y fortalecer las prácticas y métodos utilizados para crear, valorar y reconocer la experiencia/conocimiento que se crea a través de las vidas e historias de personas cuyo acceso a sus propias realidades ha sido socavado en innumerables formas de invisibilización, negación y opresión. Veremos cómo las relaciones persistentes entre las personas, el territorio y los otros no humanos se han devaluado en los sistemas capitalistas / coloniales y, como tal, la propia existencia de toda la vida está en peligro. Por otro lado, la persistencia de relaciones como la relacionalidad, la comunalidad y los sistemas económicos no capitalistas también han sido la primera línea de resistencia, perseverancia y creación de otras formas de hacer y ser la vida. Como académicos y activistas tenemos la responsabilidad de romper con las estructuras jerárquicas de creación y práctica del conocimiento, al tiempo que abrazamos las múltiples formas de conocer y ser que son las formas mayoritarias de existencia. Taller en línea Descripción Breve: Antes de la invasión europea de las Américas florecieron economías no capitalistas. Sin embargo, esa historia económica no es de dominio público. Abundaban las economías no capitalistas entrelazadas con formas de gobierno y sociedad. Imperios, federaciones, regiones y comunidades compusieron y coordinaron sistemas económicos autóctonos; algunos de los cuales persisten hasta nuestros días. La gran variedad de prácticas y filosofías subyacentes generó una enorme diversidad en la forma en que la gente creaba abundancia y luchaba contra la precariedad. Desde prácticas colectivas como minka, ayni, faena, trueque, ayuda mutua, trueque, potlatch, cantos sagrados, formas colectivas de trabajo, celebraciones, etc. hasta distintas formas de comercialización, imperialismo, esclavitud y ofrendas de sangre. Mientras que, por un lado, parece que nos vamos a ahogar en la crisis existencial que plantea el capitalismo, por otro, cada vez más personas se unen a la lucha por descolonizar y, al hacerlo, están cambiando la forma en que creamos valor y, a través de la práctica, están cambiando la forma en que nos experimentamos unos a otros y a la propia Tierra. Este taller reúne historias económicas de todas las Américas con la intención de observar cómo estas geografías han materializado diferentes formas de organización social y esfuerzos para crear bienestar a través del tiempo y el espacio. Muchas prácticas económicas indígenas han persistido a pesar del genocidio y el epistemicidio. Gracias a su persistencia, las comunidades de los pueblos originarios marginados por el capitalismo y la colonialidad pudieron garantizar la continuidad de sus linajes y epistemes en general. Por ejemplo, las prácticas económicas comunitarias del continente africano fueron traídas a las Américas durante la esclavitud forzada y la comercialización de los cuerpos racializados. Estas prácticas que trajeron de bienestar fueron clave para la supervivencia generacional a pesar de siglos de extrema violencia justificada en la institucionalización de la blancura. Al conocer nuestra historia económica podemos elegir qué prácticas queremos preservar y cuáles acaban dañando nuestras relaciones. Mientras trabajamos para descolonizar nuestro presente y nuestro futuro, es importante conocer nuestra historia y la amplia gama de formas de interactuar económicamente. Muchos sistemas económicos tuvieron mucho éxito, mientras que otros supusieron altos costes para la mayoría de la población. En su mayor parte, estas economías eran colectivistas y se basaban en muchas formas de toma de decisiones e intercambio de conocimientos. Esperamos debatir, explorar, cuestionar y poner en práctica las primeras economías de los Abya Yala, Isla Tortuga, Mikinoc Waajew, Cem Anáhuac y todas las formas en que podríamos conocer lo que hoy se llama América.
