This is 'pure science.' It is how fundemental facts about the universe and
all that is in it are found.

This is 'applied science.'  It includes all of the engineering fields and
various other aplications of scientific knowledge.

The line between 1 & 2 is not very clear at times, and pure science is
getting harder to find funding for.

Oops, i just cut choice #3, but it was just wishful thinking anyhow.
