I wonder if the expression "putting down roots" is connected to the ways we tie ourselves to a piece of land? I feel that way sometimes. The work can be both a joy and a burden. If we try to dominate the land aggressively our role becomes a burden because everything depends on our activity. Doing nothing results in nature reclaiming our work and homes. As we struggle with these issues age creeps up and shifts the balance. Those who feel comfortable with all this have "put down roots". jeff
