This year we tried a few new types of seed in
the garden. Those near zones 7-8 may find our
experiences useful.
Seeds from "Pinetree" www.superseeds.com
Lancelot corn, honey select corn - lodged
easily (fell over) and taste was like other
"SE" corns. Still looking for an open pollinated
corn that grows here.
Spacemaster cucumber - did not perform up to the
standards set by "marketmore" but it is open
pollinated.
Plato lettuce (Romaine type) - excellent performer.
saving the seed.
Ailsa onion - rated easy to grow and one of the
largest onions. It does not equal the "walla
walla" in flavor. It did grow well. If it stores
well we may try saving some seed.
Fooled You Pepper - This turned out to be very
interesting. It tastes like a very mild
jalapleno pepper. I'm addicted. It fits in
Mexican style cooking and makes good salsa.
It is best cooked by can be eaten raw in salads.
Zwolsche Krul celery - a small herb like plant that
grows easily. Did not make at hit in the kitchen.
Seeds from Bountiful, www.bountifulgardens.org
(this is Ecology Action, promoted by John Jeavons)
Bronze Arrow Lettuce - a fleshy small lettuce that
has good taste. saving seed.
Orach - Large (5 feet) leafy plant that was popular
in fresh salads. Easy to grow. Saving seed. This
is a green type and may be different from the bronze
orach found in other catalogs.
Taylor bean - We canned green beans and harvested about
five pounds of dried beans from a short row. I was
surprised because we have had trouble growing beans.
This bean looks like a winner. For those of
us addicted to pinto beans here is one we can grow
in the north.
