Robb,
I ran in to the same situation with UltraEdit inserting 0D's in to text
files. I sent an e-mail to UltraEdit support which responded within an
hour. It turns out all you need to do is uncheck the "Auto Convert Unix
files" in the advanced/configurations/general tab menu. No more auto
inserted carriage returns.

After having a client using UltraEdit continually getting 0D's inserted
into text files, we examined EditPlus, TextPad, and Hex Workshop as
alternatives. I personally prefer EditPlus which has more features.
TextPad is a strong second, and Hex Workshop is something no data
analyst should be without.

I second that! I ran into UltraEdit about a year ago and, since then, can't
live without it.
It's perfect for source code editting, looking at data in Hex, and etc...
It's very a very powerful editor.
