Bryan,
Ideally, your order-processing application, not your shipping software,
should have the functionality to:
- receive the order from your trading partner, and hold the data the TP
needs back on the ASN
- pick, pack and label the order
- generate the ASN, which includes the pick/pack structure, label numbers,
and data the TP needs from the order
If you can pass the shipment through your shipping application to pick up
the BOL#, Carrier name, etc., all the better;
otherwise key it in before transmitting the ASN.
