Other possible solutions:
Redesign your application so that it is responsible for lookups and conversions
of product codes.
Build a front-end / back-end processor to your app to handle lookups.
Negotiate with your trading partners so that they only supply / require the code
in the same version that your application uses.
There, that should be enough for them to allow you to modify or replace the
table :)
