Erland,

As far as I am aware, there is no rule one way or the other. As you
suspect, it depends on whatever the partners agree.

The 3 basic ways of testing that I have used in the past are:
1) Use different mailboxes for test & live data - this keeps the data
indisputably separate.
2) Use the same mailboxes with different sender/recipient identifiers
3) Use the same mailboxes with the same sender/recipient identifiers but
making use of the test indicators.
(NB the term 'mailbox' could mean VANmailboxes, FTP origins/destinations or
whatever else fits your system best)

The different approaches obviously require different configuration of your
EDI software (anywhere from an entire duplicate EDI system, through a new
partner definintion down to a change in a definition of an existing
dataflow).

IMHO, option 1 is overkill in most cases, option2 is safest and option 3 is
easiest if both partners trust each other not to foul it up.

Hope this helps.

Subject: TEST INDICATOR

Question: is there any rule that says you have to use a test flag on a
test message, or is it commonly accepted to use test addresses / test
references instead of the test indicator in the UNB segment of a
UN/EDIFACT message? Or is this like many other things a case of
whatever trading partners agree? Are there any other common ways to
safely distinguish test from reality?

I'm really interested why experiences you have had on the topic of
testing with EDI messages.

have a nice w-e

Erlend Nagel.
