Michele Spychalski asked "What transaction can be used to transmit a
bill of material document?"

This is a tough one because there's no X12 transaction called "Bill of
Material." If you have a simple BOM, then maybe the PO1-SLN in the 850
Purchase Order or the LIN-SLN in the 832 Price/Sales Catalog might
suffice.

But when real guys and gals want to do BOMs - like for, say, a Boeing
777 - something else is really needed. You would think that an HL
(Hierarchical Level) loop will be needed in any honker of a BOM - so I
looked through EDISIM Standards Reference using the segment cross
reference for the transactions that use the HL. After ruling out
practically every transaction in the cross reference (things like the
113 Election Campaign and Lobbyist Reporting TS and the 837 Health Care
Claim), the only thing left was the 841 - Specifications/Technical
Information. Specify the Report Type Code in the SPI Specification
Identifier segment as "BM," and voilà - you have a Bill of Material!
