Syntactically Odette was almost identical to EDIFACT; the only
difference that I can remember is that it was possible to have a final
data element in a segment which could be repeated indefinitely. Modern
Odette messages *are* EDIFACT. Any translator which can handle the
EDIFACT syntax should be capable of handling the traditional Odette
messages and, obviously, the newer D96a based ones. The traditional
Odette messages had their own segment definitions, however, and unless a
translator allows you to specify your own segment and data element
dictionary from scratch, or provides an Odette dictionary, it might not
cut the mustard.
In the UK the EDI company most heavily involved with Odette has been
Data Interchange PLC, and their products are highly compatible with
Odette, are of good quality, and the company has a *lot* of Odette and
automotive experience.
Obviously we too have automotive clients, and thus have the maps for
Odette messages for our translators available off-the-shelf.
The 'indefinitely repeating data element' is not actually a problem for
an EDIFACT converter. Since it is conditional the mapper just needs to
provide a sufficient number of explicit instances - you are never going
to get War & Peace sent there!
An EDI system which supports Odette will probably need to be capable of
supporting OFTP and EasyLink communications, since these are
traditionally used in the automotive sector.
