Mary, The 94x transactions can be used in either envirnoment. Any business structure that requires tracking and visibility of inventory from site-to-site, site-to-warehouse, warehouse-to-warehouse, etc., can effectively apply any or all of these transactions to perform that function.

They have the option of sending a 943 to indicate shipment is on the way. Once received by the warehouse, the warehouse sends back a 944 to acknowledge receipt of the goods. The 940/945 loop series gives the supplier the option of dictating to the warehouse what to ship to the customer (940). The warehouse, once fullfilling the order to the customer, informs the supplier what was shipped (945). The 947 simply communicates inventory adjustment either at the supplier or fwd warehouse.
