I don't know if I would put it that way. Mapping is more the development
phase and Translation is the actual production process of converting a
file. It's like I use Notepad to Code (map) a C program to compile an
executable (translator).

So, I suppose translation seems to be a little more complex, dealing
more with sintax and structure validation according to a pre-defined
standard. Kind of receiving data in "xyz" standard and transforming
it to "pqr" standard. Mapping is a term of more generic use, like, if
you get a format '?*x' trasform it to 'whatever other format'.
