Yes whenever these extended characters go through EBCDIC - ASCII or ASCII -
EBCDIC conversion they get lost. Which apparently can happen within the
VAN's also is it is very common for VANs to use MVS Mainframes. In the
past when this has happened I've had to switch interconnects betweens VANs
or different systems within the same VAN. Which leads me to think VANs are
not fully X12 or UN EDIFACT compliant. :). Kind of related to the BIN
segment discussion on the list earlier.

[EDI-L] Non-ASCII characters

This is one issue I've fought within the Electric Supply industry. One
problem was when IBM AS400 machines would translate from EBCDIC to ASCII,
some characters would not translate to anything usable. Some TPs insisted
on using nonprintable characters within their defined as alphanumeric data
fields.
I can't recall how many times I've sent out the X12 12.6 table to new TPs,
but they do listen when you tell them you can't do business if they keep
using the barred characters.

Hi,
Probably you can not blame your TP.
In 4010 X12 spec read "APPLICATION CONTROL STRUCTURE
3.3 Character Set" of the specification. EDI uses not
pure ASCII but...
"Note: See ISO document 8859-1 (Latin-1 Alphabet) for
an example of an encoding of select language
characters."
